AVM Story #1
Panda Blue-
The story of Kwong, the Blue-Headed Panda
“You can come in now, children,” Ani V Min declared from beyond the door. They had never heard such a voice before: musical, crisp, and altogether intriguing. There was a hint of an ancient far eastern accent, but it did not sound scary. The three children, Mirabel, Victavius and Amber stood still in the secret tunnel afraid to move. Should they dare enter?
And so began the magical journey.
“I will now ask you to select an animal, then a vegetable and finally a mineral of your choosing," Ani V Min directed. "From them we will weave a special story. Amber, you are permitted to choose first. You can pick an animal, vegetable or mineral.”
Amber glanced toward Mirabel who nodded and smiled. “I’d like an animal,” Amber stated confidently.
“What kind of animal?” Ani V Min asked.
“A Panda Bear. A young one. And with a blue head.”
“Excellent! Very creative. Victavius what would you like to choose?
“An alien.”
“No aliens, I’m afraid. They would be considered animals or ‘its.’ Amber already selected the animal, so perhaps choose a vegetable or mineral.”
“Both,” Victavius said, a little greedily.
“Okay, since it is your first day, you may choose both.”
“A cave and a carrot.”
“Perfect, a blue-headed Panda, a cave, and a carrot.”
“And what about me?” Asked Mirabel.
“Well, since we have an animal, a vegetable, and a mineral, why don’t you choose any one of the categories as an extra bonus to the story.”
“Okay, I’ll choose a girl.”
“Good! From where would she hail?”
“Maybe China?” Mirabel said. “I’ve never been there, but she could come from the Chinese mountains.”
“Yes, that would be a wise choice, as pandas are known to thrive in that country. Mirabel, for this tale, you will become that girl and her name will be Lanying. So relax, lean back in your enchanted chairs, rest your eyes, and let your imaginations take flight. Off we go on a journey across the Pacific Ocean to the forests of China.”
Ani V Min began their story:
A panda bear was born in the bamboo forests of China. His parents, upon their first look, shrank away in fear. They were unsure if this cuddly, but unusual, bear could indeed be their new cub.
As panda relatives visited to congratulate the new mom and dad, they all began whispering just loud enough so that the parents could hear.
“Oh, he is quite the healthy cub, but whatever happened to his head?” said one.
“Big and sturdy, but very peculiar,” said another.
“Oh my gosh, whatever are they going to do with him?” cackled a third, tactless relative.
For indeed, this particular baby panda was more peculiar than any other panda cub they had ever seen. While the coarse, stiff black and white hair common to all pandas covered his body, his head was entirely blue!
The loving parents’ shock quickly subsided for they were in love with their new-born cub, redhead or not. They both readily accepted their new son for what he was. Different, yes.
“And, he’s always hungry,” the father chuckled.
“Yes true,” Mom smiled, “but he will also be gentle and kind.” For mothers knew things that the future would hold. “We should name him Kwong.”
Kwong wandered in the forests and ate lots of bamboo shoots. Perpetually hungry, he soon grew into a strong young panda. He played with all the other panda cubs who hardly noticed Kwong’s blue head.
However, this changed as he got a bit older. Bears he would meet wouldn’t play with him as much as before. They tended to stay in groups and isolated him from their games. Sad and hurt, Kwong couldn’t understand why the other pandas did not care for him. What had he done to cause them to dislike him?
On one particularly sunny day, our young panda went to drink from the communal watering hole. The wind was calm and the surface of the pool glistened like glass without any ripples. Before he waded in, and for the very first time, he could see his mirror-like reflection. Although his bristly mane was black and white from neck to toe, to his amazement, his head glowed in iridescent blue! Kwong suddenly realized how very different he looked!
“You are special,” his mother always told him. Now he knew why she had said this. Had his radiant blue face caused the other pandas to spurn him and not play with him?
When he returned home that day he asked his mom, “Do you always say I am special because my head is colored blue?”
His mom stopped tidying their den and smiled at her son. “Yes and no. It is true that no other panda has a blue head like yours and to us that makes you very unique. But mostly what makes you extra special is your joyous and kind heart. You are the gentlest panda of all. Always remember that.”
